A South Carolina REAL ID is a type of state-issued credential that complies with federal security standards. Overall, these cards are issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) and can be purchased in the form of an identification card or drivers license. Once the REAL ID act goes into full effect in 2020, you will need a secure ID or another form of federally-accepted identification to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.
It is easy to obtain an SC DMV REAL ID if you do not have one already. Overall, the process is similar to the steps required for getting a standard ID. The most significant difference is that you must provide additional documentation and you will receive a card that has a star in the corner. REAL IDs can be used in the same way as a regular license or ID, but they have the added benefit of complying with federal security standards as well.
You can order a SCDMV REAL ID when renewing your license or ID card or when applying for your first state-issued credentials. If your card is not due to expire yet, you can also upgrade to a secure card outside of your renewal period. In certain cases, you may be eligible to order your card online, as long as the SCDMV already has all of your information on file. Other times, you must visit a DMV office in person to submit the required documents, pay for the applicable fees and have your photo taken. Read More
